Tips for Preventing Coronary Heart Disease
Here are some tips to help keep your blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels under control, and reduce your risks for CHD.

Eat a heart-healthy diet

Avoid salt (sodium), saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol.

  Avoid fried and overprocessed foods.

Eat more • Fruits and vegetables every day, at least 5 servings, for their heart-friendly fibres and antioxidants that prevent saturated fats from turning into cholesterol. • Whole grains and other high-fibre foods such as beans, peas and oats to help lower cholesterol • Omega 3-rich oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines (at least twice a week) or take an Omega 3 supplement to be sure you are getting enough of these essential fatty acids.

Limit alcohol intake to 2 drinks a day for men and 1 drink a day for women.

Find a healthy weight, and stay there!

Losing as little as 10 pounds over 5-10 weeks can already significantly lower your blood pressure.

This also reduces risks for stroke and heart disease.

Learn your family medical history

Discuss your family’s history of heart health with your parents.

Knowing your family history will help you and your doctor plan a course of prevention much more effectively.

Exercise regularly

Start slow if you have to, but get it up to 30 minutes/day, 5-6 days/week.

You can also break it into 5-10 minute intervals throughout the day and work your way up.

This will help lower your risk of coronary artery disease, high blood pressure.

This also helps you maintain or get as close to your ideal weight.

Quit smoking

Within one year of quitting, you already lower your risk of cardiovascular complications by 50%.

After 3 years, your risk will be equivalent to that of a non-smoker. Get tips on how to quit effectively.

Learn to cope with stress

Try to stay positive, as an optimistic attitude may actually reduce your future risk of heart disease.
